Men'sMen's 1st XI Result: East Grinstead CC - 1st XI Won by 36 runs Date: Sat 26th May 2007 @ 12:30 Ground: East Grinstead Cricket Club Type: League : Sussex Cricket League - 1st XI Premier League Cuckfield once again won the toss and elected to bowl. Cuckfield started the stronger by taking two early wickets for little expense thanks to two testing opening spells by Patterson and Academy prospect, James Thorpe (1-13). Grinstead’s Neil Turk realised the run rate needed picking up and looked comfortable in doing so. He reached his 50 in good time, but when Grinstead’s skipper, Williamson, was dismissed for a powerful 37 Turk became more circumspect. A few of the Cuckfield bowlers were left licking their wounds after this brief period so Patterson reintroduced himself to the attack. He finished with figures of 2-71 that didn’t truly reflect the impact he had on reclaiming control of the game. He would have had more wickets to his name had his players managed to hold on to chances. Turk was once of the chances, dropped on 96, he was finally dismissed for 105. Good support from the lower batting order against some tight Cuckfield bowling took the Grinstead total to 224-7 at stumps. This target represented an identical challenge to that offered by Horsham two weeks earlier, so Cuckfield were well placed for victory, provided they held wickets in hand. Tom Mole played on for 3 but Chris Mole (27) and Stef Piolet (47) looked in good shape. Two highly questionable decisions by the umpire would see an end to their charge, however, at 119-3 Cuckfield were still just about favourite. Although the removal of Piolet ended a valuable 80-run partnership, Thorpe (46) continued to strike the ball crisply until he was caught and bowled by Adkin (3-60), who’d been reintroduced as a spinner, to great effect. This was not the end though as Cuckfield had a dearth of talent down the order. Oates and Gardner then continued to score freely but Oates (20) too lost his wicket when looking in determined mood. The remaining Cuckfield batsmen followed suit until they were 8 down. It was time to batten down the hatches but they failed to hang on. Star of the show for Grinstead was Fowle whom returned 4-55 with his left-arm spin. Another game gone begging that Cuckfield will feel they should have won. Grinstead fully deserved the win.
Men's 2nd XI Result: Cuckfield CC - 2nd XI Won by 7 wickets Date: Sat 26th May 2007 @ 13:00 Ground: Cuckfield Cricket Club Type: League : Sussex Cricket League - 2nd XI Division 1 Toss: Chichester Priory Park CC - 2nd XI won the toss and decided to bat Highlights: Cheg Abraham 114 off 127 balls James Robinson 78 off 102 balls
Cuckfield won at home by 7 wickets against Chichester Priory. Their win gave them 24 points and now leaves them 3rd in the league table. Chichester won the toss and decided to bat on a good pitch. Cuckfield started the game without any real intensity and unfortunately allowed Chichester to gain the upper hand. They eventually took their 1st wicket with the score on 84 when Goff Baker caught and bowled Bennison having induced a false shot with his clever change of pace. This wicket injected a little urgency into the Cuckfield display, and they were able to secure another three wickets in fairly short time (Goff Baker taking a further 2). At the other end Denyer also bowled excellently. It looked as if Cuckfield may now have had the momentum, but some aggressive and brave batting from Hillier and Budden firmly placed the advantage back in Chichester's hands; both scored half centuries and took Chichester past 250 in the 50th over. Cuckfield would have been disappointed at their inability to stem the flow of runs and in particular the number of boundaries that they conceded in the latter part of the innings. Chichester declared their innings on 253-4. In the final 10 overs the Chichester batsmen had plundered over 100 runs and Cuckfield took tea very much on the back foot. It had been a lack-lustre fielding performance in which Cuckfield had never really been in control. They were now faced with an up hill struggle to chase down 250. Cuckfield started their reply very well, and it became clear Chichester were finding it equally hard to contain with the ball. The shoe was now on the other foot as the Cuckfield openers, Abraham and Robinson, scored with freedom. An impressive opening stand of 180 at roughly 5 an over put Cuckfield into the driving seat. When Abraham was bowled for 114 Robinson carried on playing an excellent anchor role while Waghorn immediately set upon the increasingly beleaguered Chichester attack. Robinson eventually fell for an excellently compiled 78. Cuckfield passed their target in 47 overs having lost one further wicket (Waghorn 21). Amer and Piolet saw them home in style with 3 overs to spare. Notwithstanding the fact that batting conditions were excellent, any chase of more than 250 is an achievement and Cuckfield can feel proud of an excellent batting display.
Men's 3rd XI Result: Staplefield CC - 1st XI Won by 18 runs Date: Sat 26th May 2007 @ 14:00 Ground: Cuckfield North Type: Cup : Wisdom Cup 2007 (Round 2) Toss: Staplefield CC - 1st XI won the toss and decided to bat Having reduced Staplefield to 123-7 thanks to fine economical bowling from Collins (1-13 off 8 overs) and Hardy, Cuckfield Thirds then conceded 80 runs in the last nine overs to leave them a challenging 204 to win in their alloted 40 overs. After a shaky start Wisdom (21) and Emery (a well paced 66) put Cuckfield on the road to possible victory but when they both perished the tail failed to wag sufficiently to see the home side over the line and Staplefield ended the victors by 18 runs in a topsy turvy Wisdom Cup encounter at Cuckfield Park.
