1st XI

Cuckfield CC - 1st XI vs Steyning CC - 1st XI

Result: Cuckfield CC - 1st XI Won by 6 wickets

Date: Sat 7th Jul 2007 @ 12:30

Ground: Cuckfield Cricket Club

Type:  League : Sussex Cricket League - 1st XI Premier League

Toss:  Steyning CC - 1st XI won the toss and decided to bat

Had Nick Patterson won the toss he would have bowled, the outcome was the same when the visiting team's skipper, Greg Barnes, elected to bat.

Finally the sun decided to grace the glorious cricket fields of Sussex, much to the bewilderment of the players who'd got somewhat used to seeing rain on match day. With a new vigour and desire to grab their season by the scruff of the neck Cuckfield set about the task hungrily. Candfield (1-20) dismissed the opener for a duck to bring Kiwi Overseas, Murdoch, to the crease. The Steyning innings was always going to hinge upon his success so when he was whittled out for 35 by the off-spin of Ajmal it was a matter of time before Cuckfield would sear through the rest of the line-up. Ajmal was the destroyer in chief and returned figures of 5-54, ably supported by Patterson 3-41 and a cheeky little 1-11 from Steffan Piolet. Steyning rolled for 178.

In reply, the new opening combination of Harris and Chris Mole had to contend with an opening attack of Simpson and Schultz. Shultz and Simpson have found some success this season and Mole and Harris love to smash the ball around so this was going to be the most interesting battle of the game. Cuckfield dominated at a run-a-ball but with the score on 50 Simpson found a breakthrough – well deserved for some disciplined bowling. Harris made 22 but Cuckfield were still in control. Cuckfield then suffered the loss of two more wickets to reduce Cuckfield to 70-4. Shaky times for Cuckfield were settled by a familiar partnership of Tom Mole and Steffan Piolet. Piolet battered all of the bowlers in Twenty20 style whilst Mole accumulated. The partnership passed 50 and moved to 100 and eventually over the finishing line with 21 overs remaining.

Maximum points for Cuckfield, but nothing less would do.

Patterson's insight: “a game under our belt, a maximum pointer and a batting line up with the balance I am comfortable with”.

Pete 'The Destroyer' Widdup

Result: Cuckfield CC - 1st XI Won by 47 runs

Date: Sun 8th Jul 2007 @ 16:00

Type:  Cup : Sussex League 20/20 Cup (Round 1)

Toss:  1st XI won the toss and decided to bat

Having just defeated Lewes by some ease. Haywards Heath now faced an up-hill struggle against Cuckfield in the 20/20 .

Having won the toss Skipper Nick Patterson decided to have a bat, and opened with Billy Harris and Pakistani overseas player Saeed Ajmal. However what looked a fantastic possible partnership failed, with Ajmal getting caught at cover off the bowling of Hogue. This left Cuckfield on 5/1 off 2 overs, not a great start by any means. Enter Australian Peter Widdup, who walked to the crease dragging his bat along the floor just like the great Viv Richards. With Harris and Widdup picking the score up to 32 off four overs, Haywards Heath changed the bowling and brought on a couple of spinners overseas player Sam Irvine and captain Steve Kingcome. This changed the game, with Widdup and Harris taking full advantage off some clearly non-premiership style bowling. With Widdup smashing the overseas for four huge sixes in a row, and then smashing Kingcome out of the ground for a couple more, bringing up his 50 off just 25 balls. Widdup then pointed at spinner Kingcome and then pointed towards the trees at square leg, where that very next ball he dispatched him over trees yet again. Widdup was later caught on the boundary for 68 off 32 balls. Meanwhile Harris was later controversially bowled by Kingcome. This brought Gardner and Robinson to the crease who turned ones in to two's and with some great running bought the 22 run partnership off just 13 balls to an end with being run-out from a direct hit. Robinson was then given LBW walking across his stumps trying to paddle one down to fine-leg. Richie Amer, Nick Patterson and Kristian Piolet then kept up with the run rate playing some fantastic 20/20 style shots with the run-rate still going up. Richie Amer was then caught for 11 and then Patterson Bowled for 9, which then brought Fireman Fairhall to the crease for his one bat of the year. However his quick 21 including hitting Hayden James for a huge six in to the trees kept piling the pressure on the Heath and then Piolet joining in on the action hitting some glorious drives off James. This left Cuckfield on a fantastic 191/8 off their 20.

Haywards Heath got off to a great start and with Alex Honeysett and Sam Irvine hitting fours too often. Fairhall and Patterson took a break after 5 overs with the Heath on 52. They were replaced By Rodney Candfield and Saeed Ajmal. Ajmal then dismissed Honeysett with a direct throw off his own bowling to put Cuckfield back on track. However, this bought big-hitting Hayden James to the crease who had previously hit 60 against Lewes Priory. Rodney whose next over went for two runs piled the pressure on to the Heath who tried to attack Ajmal with getting caught on the boundary by Piolet. Patto then came back on and replaced Candfield whose two overs went for 4 runs. James then sliced one off Patterson and was caught with another fantastic catch from Piolet and this was the turning point in the match. Haywards Heath then collapsed slowly with the run rate increasing. Ajmal grabbing four wickets while Billy Harris picking up two wickets and going for just 25 runs. Fairhall (1/34), Patterson (1/36) and Candfield (1/8) all getting a piece of the action. Haywards heath eventually being skittled out for 144 meaning they had been defeated by Cuckfield for second time this season.

Cuckfield now face invitation league side, Billingshurst on July 22.

2nd XI

Twos get much needed win at Haywards Heath

Result: Cuckfield CC - 2nd XI Won by 112 runs

Date: Sat 7th Jul 2007 @ 13:00

Type:  League : Sussex Cricket League - 2nd XI Division 1

Toss:  Haywards Heath CC - 2nd XI won the toss and decided to bowl

Cuckfield seconds were away to local rivals Haywards Heath in a must win fixture. Haywards Heath won the toss and asked Cuckfield to bat.

Richard Amer opened the innings with some explosive hitting  and was supported by a very well construed 55 from Jack Waghorn and an explosive 29 from just 17 balls from Tommy Watson. Once these two wickets fell Jack Denyer (42 not out) joined Kristian Piolet (39) at the crease to take Cuckfield to 219 for 5 declared after just 46 overs.

Cuckfield then set about their task of bowling Haywards Heath out.  A brilliant opening partnership between Tom Flower and Taz De Reuck allowed Cuckfield to take a few early wickets. The ever dependable Goff Baker weighed in with 2 wickets, which together with Flower's 4/33 condemned Haywards Heath to resounding 112 run defeat and a much needed thirty points for Cuckfield.

3rd XI

Cuckfield CC - 3rd XI vs Copthorne CC - 1st XI

Result: Cuckfield CC - 3rd XI Won by 7 wickets

Date: Sat 7th Jul 2007

Type:  League : Stoner Mid Sussex League Division 2 2007

Toss:  Copthorne CC - 1st XI won the toss and decided to bat

On an unusually summer like day Copthorne won the toss (hurrah) and elected to bat. Vice Captain Collins was detained on domestic duties so the new ball was shared by the young tyros Davy and Wisdom who bowled very tidily taking a wicket a piece.A quick spell from Burwood garnered a vital wicket and then the two old heads Lynch and Hardy kept things tight and the wickets falling.Lynch,on a hat-trick at one point, finished with 4-40 off sixteen overs.

A final total of 148-9 looked well short of par and despite the early loss of Reid Crampton (51) and Waghorn (43 not out) steered the home team to a valuable victory that puts them in the mix for promotion.

4th XI

Result: Cuckfield CC 4th XI won

Date: Sat 7th July 2007 @ 14:00

Ground: Streat

Type: League

Toss: Streat & Westmeston II won the toss and elected to field

Streat asked Cuckfield to bat and this looked a good move when the visitors lost 3 wickets for 30 runs.  Matt Wynn (aged 15) then joined JJ Kilmartin (aged 14) and they added 70 before Matt was caught for 21. With minimal help from the middle order and tail JJ who was run out for 118 ensured a very satisfactory total of 181 for 9 and maximum bonus points.  Seldom has there been such a mature innings from one so young.

Streat also lost 3 quick wickets and had lost 6 before a sound stand developed. This was broken by Ossie Young who had both batsmen caught in a useful 4 over spell. The opening bowlers returned but it was Billy Collinson (aged 13) who got the last wicket with the first ball of the last over. Guy Dixon bowled well for his 3 wickets whilst Billy, Alan Piolet and Ossie got 2 each. A most enjoyable game!

Sunday XI

Cool as a cucumber Mitchell (with a little help from Goldilocks) sees Cuckfield home in thrilling finish

Result: Cuckfield CC - Sunday XI Won by 2 wickets

Date: Sun 8th Jul 2007 @ 14:00

Ground: Cuckfield Cricket Club

Type:  Friendly

Toss:  Old Albanians CC - 1st XI won the toss and decided to bat

With 7 needed from 3 balls, Dame Jo strode to the wicket, calmly blocked the first ball from the OAs opening bowler before unselfishly knocking the second for a single and thus allowing Dan Bowman the opportunity of glory rather than herself. Thankfully, Goldilocks did not disappoint and the last ball of the game sailed 20 yards over the boundary to give CCC a thrilling 2-wicket win. Such a result had seemed unlikely 15 overs before with the run rate already over 9 an over; however, a (surprisingly) good innings of 83 from the Hough, supported initially (if a little slowly) by newcomer Rowe gave CCC some hope. When the bumptious one bottled his hundred - and thus the chance not to run the marathon - Bowman took over and hit a 27 ball 50 with support from Wizz and (briefly) the skipper. Watson and Stanton contributed 4 from 5 balls between them. Guess how they got out? (NB Dame Jo - words needed, I feel).

In the OAs innings, a number of dropped catchs allowed them to get to 219; steady bowling from Wizz, Watson and Goldilocks, ably supported by debutant Cook (2 drops - Tommy and a sitter to mid-off) was offset by Hough's efforts.
