Men's1st XI Result: Drawn Date: Sat 11th Aug 2007 @ 12:00 Ground: The Saffrons Type: League : Sussex Cricket League - 1st XI Premier League Toss: 1st XI won the toss and decided to bat The most important game of the league weekend saw league leaders Eastbourne host Cuckfield at The Saffrons. Eastbourne Captain, Tom Smith was on 12 man duties with England at The Oval, but Sussex duo, James Kirtley and Ollie Rayner both played. Patterson's decision to bat first was founded on a number of factors, the pitch looked as though it was going to deteriorate quickly, the sun was going to be tiring on the fielders, especially if Cuckfield could bat for the full 58 overs and Pete Widdup and David “Ollie” Reid were having travel problems and absent for the start. The absentees also had some kit in their car which resulted in Thorpe being without his kit and unable to open the batting so Cuckfield had to fall back on the opening partnership of Tom and Chris Mole. Chris Mole was struggling with a back spasm so he played the anchor role whilst Tom Mole enjoyed a more expansive role. A cautious opening partnership was beginning to blossom when Chris fell for 28 with the score on 86. Collier deserved the wicket for some useful bowling in which he extracted a fair amount of movement off the pitch. This opening stand was massive given Cuckfield's problems. Stef Piolet (19) stroked some sublime cover-drives before departing. At 125-2 Cuckfield were well placed to set a target in the region of 250, however a hostile spell of bowling by Kirtley, refocused the Cuckfield batsmen's minds on survival, which they managed without incident. In trying to pick up the run-rate Tom Mole fell for 78. A regular succession of wickets then followed but this fortunately did not include Thorpe. He ensured Cuckfield piled on the runs ably assisted by cameos from Widdup and Ajmal. Cuckfield were satisfield to reach 237-7 as the batting conditions were getting worse – including inconsistent bounce. Eastbourne's attempt at a run chase was non-existent, despite some attacking field settings. Rayner and Ragheb Aga posed a threat, but when Rayner went for 19, there was only going to be one possible winner. To Eastbourne's credit hey held on at 173-8, in the face of some sharp turning deliveries from Ajmal 2-30. Piolet's seam bowling returned figures 4-37, just reward for intelligent variation and Thorpe deserved better. Highlight of the match was the intense 3 over barrage that Kirtley served up to Tom Mole and the 15 year old Thorpe. It was welcoming to see that club cricket matters to top class players.
